Apr 12 - GSD Urges Government To Resolve 20 Month Delay Of Prescription Payments

The GSD says it has received representations from several pharmacies regarding the delay in GPMS (prescription medicine) payments from the Government dating as far back as August 2017.

A statement follows below:

The GSD understands that in theory, 90% of medicines dispensed are meant to be paid immediately, with the balance of 10% paid on adjustment a month later. However, some pharmacies claim there is currently a two month delay on the 90% of medicines with assurances being given that they will be paid by next week, but worse still the 10% balance of all medicines dispensed since August 2017 have yet to be paid.

Minister for Health and Care, Lawrence Llamas said: “I am sure there may be legitimate technical reasons for the delay, however, the timing is most unfortunate given that pharmacies have been stockpiling for some time now in preparation for Brexit.

"Consequently, pharmacies find themselves having bought a minimum 3 months supplies of medicines in the name of Brexit yet to be dispensed in addition to the equivalent of up to 4 full months of supplies already dispensed yet to be repaid when you consolidate all the arrears overdue. It is not just unfair, but dangerous to place businesses under these pressures.”
