Mar 05 - Minister Sacramento Attends UN
The Minister for Equality and Social Services, Samantha Sacramento is attending the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) 57th Session at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. She will be at the UN from the 4th to the 6th March.
The CSW is a functional Commission of the United Nations Economic and Social Council and it is dedicated exclusively to gender and equality and the advancement of women.
Representatives of the UN member states meet in New York annually to evaluate the progress on gender equality, identify challenges, set global policies and formulate policies to promote gender equality worldwide. The priority theme of this year's session is ' The elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls'.
The Minister is attending together with the UK delegation. The UK has organised a full programme of activities and Minister Sacramento will be attending many of the side events along with the UK delegation.
"For the first time under our new Government, Gibraltar has a Ministry for Equality. As the Minister responsible, it is my duty to ensure the advancement of people's rights. It is my great privilege to be attending the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, indeed this is the first time that Gibraltar has ever attended. There is a lot of work to be done in this field given that this area was never one of concern for the previous administration" said Minister Sacramento.
