Apr 29 - Minister Sacramento Furthers Equality Agenda in London
Samantha Sacramento, Minister for Equality and Social Services is in London this week furthering the Government’s Equality Agenda.
The Minister last week met with Minister Helen Grant, the Joint Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Justice and for Women and Equality Issues. The Ministers discussed issues common to their portfolio and shared experiences and information on the matter.
Minister Sacramento also attended a seminar in relation to gay rights, which focused on equality issues. One of the speakers at this seminar was Trevor Phillips OBE former Chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission and prior to that Chair of the Commission for Racial Equality.
‘This is an important visit, not only because it assists me in my task in developing the new Ministry for Equality but also to establish relevant contacts in the United Kingdom. I am proud to be able to say that the Gibraltar Government is progressing the Equalities Agenda and we will soon be publishing the Civil Partnership Legislation as well as amending the adoption act to allow for adoption by same sex couples. I was also pleased to have the opportunity of speaking to Trevor Phillips. Mr Phillips was the Chair of the Commission for Racial Equality when I worked there ten years ago’ explained Minister Sacramento.
