June 04 - GSD Urges Picardo to Open Register of Electors

parliamentAs the debate regarding Parliamentary and Democratic reform continues in Parliament this morning, the GSD has claimed that it is within the power of the Chief Minister to open the Register of Electors, in order to allow those who may not have registered, to do so.

The party notes that they have been approached by many people who have not yet registered to vote. Former Chief Minister Peter Caruana opened to the register during the 2011 General Election, with the support of former leader of the opposition, Fabian Picardo.

At the time Mr. Picardo was quoted saying, ‘in future, we think it may be that there has to be a change to the registration requirements so that it should be possible to register throughout the period until a fixed time before an election date, rather than only opening the registration window at fixed times.’

Commenting on the matter, Leader of the Opposition Daniel Feetham noted, ‘this is yet another example of Mr Picardo saying one thing when in Opposition and doing the opposite when in Government. I urge the Chief Minister to stand by his stated principles and give those who are not registered to vote an opportunity to do so.’
