Aug 12 - “Hands Off Our Rock” – Says Boris Johnson

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson has written in yesterday’s Telegraph that the UK should “prise Spanish hands off the throat of our colony.”

In the comment piece, Mr Johnson says that Spanish actions and threats are “tantamount to a blockade.” He explains that he first came to Gibraltar 30 years ago and was struck by how British it felt and that the locals were “almost hysterical…in their protestations of Britishness.”

Mr Johnson argues that the UK should defend Gibraltar’s interests because, despite Spain being an EU partner, the interests and wishes of Gibraltarians are paramount: “There are 98 per cent of Gibraltarians who want to be British, and as long as that is the case it is our absolute duty to protect them and their right to go about their lawful business, in accordance with EU law, without hassle from their neighbour.”

Mr Johnson concludes that the crisis has nothing to do with fish but is a mere “diversionary tactic” and compares the current situation with that faced by Argentina in the 1980s.
