Aug 12 - Defenders Of Gibraltar Featured In Spanish Press
The right-wing Spanish daily ABC today carries an article on local pressure group the Defenders of Gibraltar. Calling the group “nationalist”, the ABC says that the Defenders have started an “anti-Spanish” campaign in order to justify the actions of the Government of Gibraltar.
The article profiles the group following its first anniversary and carries an interview with its President Gareth Gingell. ABC argues that the group believes that everything that has gone wrong with Gibraltar “is the fault of the PP.”
ABC also mentions the leaflets handed out by the Defenders to people in the frontier explaining that the queues are a deliberate attempt by Spain to apply pressure on Gibraltar.
The article claims that, although the Defenders have no explicit political affiliations, the group was created in a “new context of nationalism” inspired by what it describes as the “ultranationalist” UKIP.
