Aug 27 - EU Spokesman Outlines Commission’s Investigation into Spanish Border Controls

frontierOliver Bailly spokesman for the EU Commission yesterday outlined the visit of a number of specialists to the Gibraltar – Spain border, in order to evaluate the situation that has occurred due to ever growing tensions. A report on EU Commission news site Eur Activ, insists that Gibraltar and Spain are expected to enter into dialogue to solve the dispute in the spirit of cooperation.

Mr. Bailly claimed that Commission is ‘of course prepared to help the situation by bringing it’s legal expertise to bare as guardian of the Treaty and by organising a mission on the spot as soon as possible’. He added that a date has yet to be decided for the mission but it will be discussed with the Spanish authorities at a technical level ‘soon’.  The Commission believe that this is mainly a matter of birder controls, so any investigation will cover that aspect. Customs will also be investigated, with the need to combat trafficking of goods acting as a salient task for the Commission.

Both Spanish and British authorities are set to be involved in the mission. The Commission insists that during their visit the artificial reef will not be dealt with. The issue to set to be tackled separately following a complaint filed by the Spanish Minister for Agriculture and the Environment.
