Aug 29 - Guardia Civil Director General Makes Algeciras Branch Visit to Reaffirm Government’s Support

guardia civilThe Guardia Civil’s Director General Arsenio Fernández de Mesa yesterday paid a visit to the branch in Algeciras as a gesture of support and gratitude from the central government in Madrid.

Spanish press reports note that Sr. Fernández de Mesa wanted to meet with the branch publicly during the climate of pressure. During his visit, Sr. Fernández de Mesa took the time to be briefed on developments in border controls and inspections and the situation at sea.

Europe Sur reports that speaking to officers, Sr. Fernández de Mesa insisted that their work was important in defending Spain’s interests. He urged them to continue their efforts dispite harassment and insult.

When questioned on the recent reports regarding frontier controls not allowing commercial vehicles into Gibraltar carrying construction materials, Sr. Fernández de Mesa insisted that the Guardia Civil is enforcing national and European environmental regulations. He added that Spanish authorities are required to request authorization to make a breakwater or dock, so anyone wishing to carrying out the same actions in Spanish waters must also comply with Spanish law.
