Oct 07 - Government Submits Further Frontier Complaints to EU

frontier queue The Government has sent a further 382 complaints about the border delays to the European Commission. These complaints have been collected electronically through the Government website and related to persons crossing the border into Spain or exiting Spain into Gibraltar.

The complaints covered either the length of time taken to cross the border or the questions asked by the Spanish authorities when individuals exited Spain.

Each complaint includes the name and address of the complainant as well as details of their passport or identity card.

A further 14 complaints about the queues were received today alone.

Commenting on the matter, Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia explained that frontier delays had not died down, but just appear in a less predictable pattern. He insisted that those who feel that their right to freedom of movement as an EU national is being undermined by Spanish frontier authorities, should file a complaint.

Dr Garcia added, ‘Indeed, it is possible to complain if you intended to visit Spain or enter Gibraltar but have been unable to do so because of the waiting time or the length of the queue. In other words, you do not actually have to be caught in the queue in order to complain. The Government continues to compile data and video footage on a daily basis. It is important to note, separately, that the frontierqueue.gi website has registered 4.5 million hits since it was set up in December 2012, reflecting the level of interest among members of the public.”
