Nov 12 - GSD Constitution Changes to See Party Leader Election Following General Election

gsdThe GSD this week approved a new party Constitution updating their original policy, agreed upon in 1990, during the constitution of the Party. During a meeting of the Executive it was decided that the new constitution should ‘open up democracy further within the Party’, with changes dealing with elections of Executive Committee members and the election of the Leader of the party. The Leader of the Party will now be voted by the membership and the Executive and the Executive of the GSD after every General Election, as part of a weighted 60% (members) and 40% (Executive) system.

The non MP section of the Executive Committee will be voted in by the membership on a biennial basis, allowing for re-organisation of the party.

Commenting on the changes, GSD spokesperson Isobel Ellul-Hammond noted, ‘We are very excited about this new phase in the GSD’s history, under the leadership of Daniel Feetham.  These last two years we have been working very hard to refocus the party by looking inwards, by reorganising and by empowering our members further, of which we now have quite a few new ones.  We have also been planning our GSD strategy and vision for the future and in the second half of this term, we will be rolling out our own policies for Gibraltar so the people know what to expect from us come the next General Election.  We are confident to show the electorate that we are a Government-in-waiting.’ The new Constitution will be available on www.GSDLive.gi on Monday.
