Feb 03 - GSD Calls for Gibibikes Return

gsdThe GSD Opposition has today called upon the Government to commit to replacing the Gibibikes urban bike hire scheme, before the end of their first term. GSD transport spokesman Selwyn Figueras has claimed that the scheme proved extremely popular amongst cross-frontier workers and played a part in encouraging individuals to choose and alternative form of transport for getting around in Gibraltar.

The scheme was launched in 2011 to an excellent response, however over time vandalism to the bicycles became common and the scheme stopped. The Opposition does recognise the difficulties the Government experienced with the scheme ‘but it is nonetheless calling on the Government to replace the scheme as soon as possible’.

Mr Figueras further commented, ‘I note the Minister's comments in October last year to the effect that whilst the scheme is, in principle, a good one, that the Government is going to wait for the findings of the sustainable traffic and transport plan before making a decision on its replacement. My view, and that of the Opposition, is that the scheme has proved its worth on its own merits which makes its repair/replacement a no-brainer. I am as hopeful that the Government will seize the initiative to ensure the resumption of such a service in Gibraltar without delay as I am certain that such a scheme, expanded as originally contemplated, would be very successful and widely popular in the community.’
