Feb 03 - ERG Welcomes Picardo’s Pledge On Syrian Refugees
The Equality Rights Group has welcomed the Chief Minister’s recent pledge to offer asylum to a limited number of Syrian refugees in Gibraltar.
“Gibraltar’s participation and obligations in international treaties and agreements on human rights is clear. And it is good to see the Government of Gibraltar taking its role in world affairs seriously in this way,” the group has stated.
“As a community we already react in a generous and humanitarian way when others are affected by tragedy – and the support given to the Philippines recently is just one such example. The millions of displaced and traumatised innocents who are victims of a savage and cruel civil war in Syria is particularly heartrending given the dimensions of that particular conflict.
“We can only welcome and congratulate, therefore, the Chief Minister’s recent public statement on this issue unreservedly,” the statement ends.
