Apr 18 – New Trial Measures For Cyclists During Frontier Queues

As of today the Royal Gibraltar Police will not be requiring bicycles to queue up at the loop within motorcycle holding area when crossing into Spain. The RGP will trial this measure over the coming days in response to representations made to it regarding cyclists having to queue amongst motorcycles and therefore being exposed to exhaust fumes as well as the risk of being either knocked over by the bigger and heavier motorcycles or being burnt by hot exhausts.

A similar measure was trialled a couple of years ago, albeit unsuccessfully. The RGP says that the fact remains that such issues crop up at times of increased queues when the volume of vehicles and bicycles overwhelms the physical facilities available at the frontier.

The RGP says it recognises the difficulties encountered by road users, and occasionally by pedestrians, wishing to cross the border at times of increased frontier queues. It therefore continually reassesses how these are managed with a view of reducing the impact on those caught up in the queues in an equitable manner.
