Jul 28 - Unite Backs Call To Pardon Homosexual Offences

Unite the Union has echoed the call by the Equality Rights Group (ERG) to retrospectively pardon men accused of homosexual offences prior to its decriminalisation in 1993 as spearheaded by Unite in the U.K.

The Unite Gibraltar Branch says it is in harmony with Head Office's policy objective and, to this extent, the ERG “can rest assured” that the Union will add its strength to theirs in pursuit of this matter.

Unite Equalities Committee Representative and Public Services Convenor, Angelique Borastero, said:

"As was the case when the ERG campaigned for the amendment to the Civil Marriage Act to afford homosexual couples the right to marry, Unite Gibraltar is vocal in addressing this social issue. We unambiguously supported the campaign then and we will unambiguously support the current campaign, particularly as it is born out of Unite objectives. Pardoning those men that were accused of these offences, at a time where there was little understanding or tolerance, is the right thing to do."
