Oct 22 - Mass In Fulham Marks Start Of Gibraltar Day In London Events

Earlier today the Governor, Gibraltarians and guests attended Sunday mass at the Our Lady of Dolours Servite Church in Fulham Road. Also in attendance was the Mayor of Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Councillor Marie-Therese Rossi.

The service traditionally marks the start of the annual Gibraltar Day in London celebrations which will culminate in a reception at the top of the Gherkin skyscraper tomorrow evening.

Gibraltar’s Bishop, Carmel Zammit, led the service and delivered a sermon during which he said that certain ideologies were undermining core values in Gibraltar.

“My appeal today is to try and be on our guard against losing some basic values. These are, among others, the value of life, of freedom of speech, of human dignity, of religious freedom and the values of solidarity and compassion…there is also the value of family life and the defence of human life which begins from the moment of conception to its natural end,” he said.

He said that these values were under attack when people were tempted to look after their own interests at the expense of others.

He also said Gibraltar Day was important because it celebrated our roots.

The service was followed by a small reception.

We’ll be bringing you more news tomorrow from London.
