Dec 11 - New Director Of Public Prosecutions Appointed

Christian Rocca has been appointed Gibraltar’s first Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Mr Rocca will be in charge of the day-to-day running of the criminal prosecution service under the direction of the Attorney General (AG) who can now concentrate on being the chief legal advisor to the Government. The appointment is for an initial term of five years.

With the creation of the new post, Gibraltar will follow the UK model where the DPP and AG are two separate appointments.

The appointment follows an announcement in April this year by the Minister of Justice, Neil Costa, that the post was a manifesto commitment that would “improve the administration of justice for the benefit of our entire community.”

The Attorney General, Michael Llamas QC, said this morning that the appointment formed an important part of the reform of the Gibraltar Law Offices. He added that Mr Rocca had the “gravitas and competence” to excel in the new role.

Mr Rocca, who has worked as a lawyer in Isolas for the last 24 years, said that criminal law was always his passion and that it was an honour to be appointed Gibraltar’s first DPP. He said he was looking forward to improving the administration of justice on the Rock.
