Feb 15 - Young People Selected To Attend Commonwealth Day Events

Following the judging of an essay competition announced in December, Mr Joey Pitaluga and Miss Sadie Lucas have been selected to attend a series of Commonwealth Day events in London. This year, Commonwealth Day will be observed on Monday 11 March.

In a programme organised by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, the two Gibraltarian students will be invited to attend a multicultural, multi-faith service at Westminster Abbey, in the presence of HM The Queen. In the evening, Joey and Sadie are also invited to the Secretary General’s Reception which again will be attended by The Queen.

The theme for 2019 is ‘A connected Commonwealth’ and this year marks the 70th anniversary of the formation of the Commonwealth as it is configured today, with old ties and new links enabling co-operation towards social, political and economic development, which is both inclusive and sustainable.

The Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia said:

“Last year we sent young Gibraltarians to the Commonwealth Youth Parliament and to the Commonwealth Youth Forum for the first time. It proved to be an invaluable experience for those who attended and they also put Gibraltar on the map. This latest initiative is in line with the policy of the Government to increase our engagement with the institutions of the Commonwealth as we prepare to leave the European Union.”
