Feb 15 - Commander Joint Forces Command Visits Gibraltar

General Sir Chris Deverell, Commander Joint Forces Command (ComdJFC) paid a return visit to Gibraltar this week to meet with British Forces Gibraltar personnel and their families.

During his time on the Rock, ComdJFC visited Four Corners where he was able to see, first hand, how much the Service Families Accommodation build project had progressed since his last visit. Construction activity on the site is nearing completion and will result in 150 families accommodation in the one location with fantastic leisure facilities on their door step.

The General also took the opportunity to call in at the Community Centre HELMPoint, where he spent some time chatting to a number of British Forces Gibraltar personnel and their families. HELMPoint will be the community focal point for the families living in Four Corners once the build and relocation programme has completed.

ComdJFC’s next stop was RAF Gibraltar where he presented a Commander JFC Commendation to the Airfield Ground Support Unit (AGSU), a team of 13 locally employed civilians,

The AGSU was formally recognised in the New Year’s Honours List 2019 for their outstanding contribution to airfield safety and the operational output of RAF Gibraltar. Also in attendance was Commodore Tim Henry, Commander British Forces Gibraltar, Station Commander, Wing Commander John Kane and a number of personnel from RAF Gibraltar.

Reflecting on the Commendation, Wing Commander Kane said: “I am extremely proud of the team and this recognition reflects their excellent dedication to duty”. The AGSU manager, Mr Alexei Borge, echoed the Station Commander’s comments. He was also very proud of his team, stating that the award will enhance the team’s confidence and cohesion.

The hard work of this dedicated team is paramount to the safe operation of the airfield, work that has deservedly been recognised with this commendation. Not long after the award presentation from the General, the team were back at work, sweeping the runway for the afternoon’s aircraft movements. This commendation recognises AGSU’s significant contribution to the airfield, and RAF Gibraltar is extremely thankful to the team for their work.

Whilst on the Rock General Sir Chris Deverell also managed a courtesy call on Mr Picardo, the Chief Minister.
