Apr 18 - Mayor Of Gibraltar Expresses Condolences Following Madeira Bus Crash
The Mayor of Gibraltar, John Gonçalves, has written to the Mayor of Funchal Paulo Cafôfo on hearing of the sad news of the tourist bus crash near Caniço.
Mayor Gonçalves has asked Mayor Cafôfo to convey the condolences of the people of Gibraltar to the Mayor of Caniço Filipe Sousa, and to extend these to the families of the casualties.
Mayor Gonçalves’ letter reads as follows:
Dear Paulo,
I have heard the terrible news of the tourist bus crash in Caniço with great sadness.
On behalf of the people of Gibraltar, who hold Madeira in such high esteem, and of myself in particular, I would be most grateful if you could convey to the Mayor of Caniço, Sr Filipe Sousa, heartfelt condolences, extended to the relatives of the deceased.

The Gibraltarians have a special and historic connection to Madeira, where many found a safe home from home during the wartime evacuation of Gibraltar’s civilian population, and Mayor Gonçalves was born on the island.
