Royal Gibraltar Regiment Officer Promoted To Major

A Royal Gibraltar Regiment officer, Captain Grant Smith, was recently promoted to the rank of Major.

Major Smith is one of two Royal Gibraltar Regiment soldiers currently on long term deployment from the Rock.

A spokesperson said: "Major Smith has been posted to the UK for a year, working at the Attack Helicopter Force HQ at Wattisham Airfield near Ipswich in Suffolk.  He is part of a small operations and plans team that is responsible for the planning, execution and coordination of all operations, exercises and other commitments for two frontline Army Air Corps Attack Helicopter Regiments and one REME Aviation Engineering Support Regiment."

Major Smith said: “Since arriving in post, I have assisted in the deployments of Apache Helicopters on operations and exercises to the US, The Baltics, Norway, Germany and Oman, to name a few.  I have also assisted in the planning and execution of a series of short-term operational commitments, both here in the UK and overseas. I am currently working on the deployment of a squadron to the US later this year to conduct training in order to generate future front line attack helicopter crews.  I have enjoyed working with the Army Air Corps immensely and I have found the job hugely interesting and rewarding.”

Major Smith is due to return back to Gibraltar in 2020 where he will assume Regimental duties.
