Gibraltar Comes 5th In Darts European Youth Cup

Gibraltar has come 5th place following last week's Darts European Youth Cup.

A statement from the Gibraltar Darts Association follows below:

Unfortunately for Craig & Jerome it was a tough start to the tournament for them as they lost both their group games against very strong opposition in Scotland and Netherlands.

Justin & Sean got their day off to a great start with a 3-0 win over Denmark. Sadly they lost their second game 3-1 against Iceland but they still managed to progress through their group in 2nd place.

In the Last 16 Justin & Sean faced Scotland’s Mitchell & Gallazzi. The game was expected to be a tough one but our boys managed to put in a brilliant performance and defeat them in straight legs 3-0.

In the Quarter-Finals Justin & Sean faced England’s Bennett & McCarthy. Leighton Bennet is one of the hottest prospects in youth darts at the moment and this game was going to be a very hard game for our boys. However, once again they put in a brilliant performance and defeated them 3-1.

In the Semi-Finals Justin & Sean faced Czech Republic’s Šedivy & Houdek. Unfortunately our boys could not keep their run going and lost the game 3-1.

Justin & Sean secured a Bronze Medal, an outstanding achievement well done.

SINGLES EVENT

In Group 1 Craig won 2 matches out of 3, he finished 2nd in the group and progressed to the Last 32.

In Group 8 Jerome lost both his matches, he finished 3rd in the group and unfortunately did not progress to the next round.

In Group 9 Justin won 1 match out of 2, he finished 2nd in the group and progressed to the Last 32.

In Group 14 Sean won both his matches, he finished 1st in the group and progressed to the Last 32.

In the Last 32 Justin lost his match 3-0 against a tough opponent Danny Jansen from the Netherlands. Sean defeated his Welsh opponent Taylor Smoldon 3-2 and Craig defeated his Danish opponent Robin Stegler 3-0.

In the Last 16 they both faced very tough opponents. Unfortunately they both lost, Sean lost 3-0 against Marcel Bus from the Netherlands and Craig lost 3-2 against Keelan Kay from England.

TEAM EVENT

On Friday our boys played the team event, it was a tough start to the day with a 9-5 defeat against the Republic of Ireland, but our boys bounced back in style with back to back wins against Scotland 9-7 and against Denmark 9-6.

Next up they faced Czech Republic in the Quarter-Finals. It was a very very tight match which went down to the very last leg. Unfortunately we lost the last leg decider and lost the game 9-8, a heart breaking defeat for our boys.

Once again it was a very successful event, the boys keep on progressing immensely and it shows in the results. Gibraltar is proud of you! Next up the 2019 JDC Junior World Darts Championship in September held in Gibraltar... we can’t wait!
