A statement from Cancer Relief Gibraltar follows below:
Cancer Relief Gibraltar today announces a transition in its leadership, as long-serving Chairperson Marisa Desoiza steps down after more than 22 years in the role, and Fabian Vinet assumes the position.
Marisa’s tenure marks a period of extraordinary growth and transformation for the charity. From its early days as a small organisation at the Lady Williams Centre supporting a few individuals, Cancer Relief has evolved into one of Gibraltar’s largest charities, now supporting c.500 individuals including patients and their families, through a wide range of nursing, holistic and palliative care services delivered at the Cancer Relief Centre and in the community.
Reflecting on her time as Chair, Marisa highlighted several milestones that shaped the charity’s development. These include the move to the current site and the appointment of Chief Executive Grainne McKenna. These events enabled a significant expansion of holistic services funded by the community. In addition, the Gibraltar Government's Grant funding the Hospice Outreach Service strengthened the charity’s ability to further develop palliative and hospice care provision within the community in partnership with the GHA".
Marisa expressed deep gratitude to the charity’s staff, volunteers, partners and supporters, noting that their dedication has been the cornerstone of Cancer Relief’s success. While stepping down as Chair, she will continue to serve on the Board of Trustees.
Incoming Chair Fabian Vinet paid tribute to Marisa’s “remarkable service and enduring legacy,” acknowledging her leadership as instrumental in shaping the charity’s direction and impact.
“It is a privilege to take on this role,” Fabian said. “Cancer Relief Gibraltar has built over four decades of compassionate service, and I am proud to continue that work alongside our dedicated team, volunteers, partners and supporters.” Fabian also recognised the vital contributions of the Gibraltar Health Authority and the Government of Gibraltar.
Looking ahead, Fabian - a Trustee since 2019 and the Deputy Chair for the past four years, and who brings his extensive legal knowledge and experience to the role - expressed optimism about the future, reaffirming the charity’s commitment to developing its services and continuing to provide high-quality care and support to individuals living with cancer, and their families.
“Cancer Relief Gibraltar exists to serve our community,” Fabian added. “We remain steadfast in our mission and deeply grateful for the trust and support that enables us to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.”
