GSD Welcomes Line Wall Road Pedestrian Crossing

The GSD have welcomed the installation of a new pedestrian crossing on Line Wall Road.

A statement from the GSD follows below:

The GSD notes the recent announcement by the Government regarding the installation of a new light controlled pedestrian crossing on Line Wall Road, adjacent to the Youth Centre.

This is a measure that directly reflects concerns raised in Parliament by the Hon Craig Sacarello on the  24th June 2024 regarding the safety of pedestrians, particularly families with young children, at  precisely this location. At the time, the proposal for a crossing or similar intervention was dismissed  by the Government, with suggestions that such matters were inappropriate for discussion and should  instead be left entirely to technical bodies.

Today’s announcement confirms what was evident then: that there was a clear and pressing need for  a safer, controlled crossing point in this area due to increasing pedestrian movement linked to nearby  facilities, including a nursery and community spaces.

Craig Sacarello commented, “We welcome the Government’s eventual recognition of this issue and  its decision to act. Public safety, particularly where vulnerable road users are concerned, should always  take precedence over political point-scoring or procedural deflection.

This development underscores the importance of raising community concerns both in Parliament and beyond. Constructive scrutiny and engagement are essential to ensuring that necessary improvements  are identified and delivered.

We will continue to advocate for practical, evidence-based measures that enhance safety and quality  of life for all residents.”
