Apr 11 - Five Star Floatel Set for Ocean Village
Following a number of suggestions, and a rumour buzz circulating the Social network, Sunborn, a privately owned property development and investment company based in Finland, has confirmed that a Sunborn Yacht Hotel will be set up in Ocean Village.
Sunborn has over fifteen years of experience in developing luxury yacht hotels and has owned and operated floating hotels in London and Finland. Each yacht hotel is custom-built for the location and the experience is different in each one. Further active development projects include Barcelona and London.
The ‘floatel’ will be 5-star classified and has been custom-designed for luxury hotel operations. The yacht is set to open towards the end of the year.
The floating structure – subject to the Gibraltar planning process – will be attached to the dockside by mooring arms that are specially designed to hold the yacht in a fixed and solid position. Guest access to the vessel will be via a faced entrance and an enclosed glass bridge.
Commenting on the hotel, Tourism Minister Neil Costa exclaimed, ‘we are delighted that Sunborn has chosen Gibraltar for their 5-star plus project. Sunborn has a proven track record in creating successful hotel operations. The yacht hotel will create many jobs locally, and we believe it will become an icon and attraction for Gibraltar.’
Director of Ocean Village Brian Stevendale added that Ocean Village recognized that this is a massive investment. He added, ‘clearly a 5-star plus hotel and conference centre is a welcomed development recognising the success of Gibraltar’.
