Jan 17 - Gibtelecom Purchases Treasury Building for £5.8 Million
Gibtelecom yesterday announced their plans to purchase the Haven building at John Mackintosh Square on a 150-year lease, for £5.8 million. The building recently housed the Treasury and is half owned by the Government of Gibraltar.
Built in 1972, the Haven originally planned to house the Government Telephone Department and therefore, already contains some of the necessary electrical equipment including fixed line, Internet and mobile technologies. Tim Bristow, Gibtelecom CEO also notes that the building is connected to Gibtelecom’s John Mackintosh Square headquarters.
Commenting on the project, Gibtelecom’s Technical Director, Xavi Bado explained, ‘expansion of the technical facilities in the Haven building will allow the Company to house, amongst other things, its next generation communications switch that will eventually replace the existing System X telephone exchange. Although this is a medium term project that would happen in the next five to seven years, the Company needs to start planning at an early stage the extensive relocation of the copper and fibre cables from the City Hall.'
