Jan 17 - Airport Car Park Closure Sparks Public Disapproval

news As from the beginning of February, the former Airport Carpark is set to house buses, and will no longer act as a public car park. The temporary coach park will then be closed entirely, when it reverts to the Ministry of Defence under the 2004 and 2011 Lands Agreement.

This news has sparked frustration in locals who insist the car park is necessary and is used frequently by those travelling into Spain, who do not wish to experience the lengthy queues. A petition has been launched on iPetitions to stop the closure of the car park; so far it has received 169 signatures.

A statement released by Gibraltar Car Parks Limited insists that the Government has concluded that this site is the most appropriate for the relocation of buses as it was set to close to become a site for MOD housing anyway.

The statement adds that users of the car park will have the option of parking at the new airport terminal, the Devil’s Tower Road multi-storey car park or at the new car park at Western Beach, about fifty metres down Winston Churchill Avenue. It is also noted that the Government is planning to construct a multi-storey car park on the site of the old terminal building.
