Jan 27 - Holocaust Memorial Day In Gibraltar
Local dignitaries and guests met at Grand Battery House this morning to commemorate this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day. The Chief Minister Fabian Picardo gave a short speech underlining the importance of remembering the Holocaust and its unthinkable suffering.
This was followed by the moving testimony of Mr Arek Hersh (pictured left), a survivor of several concentration camps and father of a long-time Gibraltar resident. Mrs Naomi Hassan-Weisfogel, a trustee of Learning from Auschwitz also spoke about her charity’s project to take schoolchildren to Auschwitz. The ceremony closed with a rendition of Leonard Cohen’s "Hallelujah" by Christian Santos and Andrea Simpson. The classic song was specially rewritten to mark this international day of remembrance. Felix Alvarez of the Equality Rights Group introduced the speakers.
