May 05 - Unite Youth Committee Calls For Local Apprenticeships

Unite the Union's Youth Committee has extended an invitation to all young people on both sides of the border to attend a special meeting which will take place at the Petit Cafe in Ocean Village this coming Tuesday 6th May at 6:00 pm.

A spokesperson for the Committee said that this is a chance for young people, whether they are working or unemployed, to become part of a “family of over two million people who are fighting to make our lives better.”

This informal, social event will involve sessions on the basics of trade unionism and how Unite can help people in everyday life.

Young people attending will also have the chance to hear about, get involved and become a part of Unite if they wish to. This year will see the Committee represent Unite Gibraltar in the UK in addition to working on a high profile apprenticeship campaign on the rock.

One of the issues that our young members committee is concerned about is vocational training and apprenticeships.

A spokesperson said: “Not all our youth will choose to carry on studying at school or go off to university, therefore it is of paramount importance that a quality apprenticeship and vocational training scheme is revived and maintained in Gibraltar, giving our youth the chance to obtain accredited training and qualifications.”

The union note that, in the past, the training centre at Gibdock offered training in electrical, mechanical and welding fabrication trades but that there have been no intakes in the last four years.

The Youth Committee demands the revival of apprenticeships in these trades and partnership agreements with all major companies in Gibraltar. Without this, it says, “there will continue be a skills deficit which is not good for the future of our economy and Gibraltar.”
