May 07 - Gibraltar Beaches Revitalised Ahead of Summer Season

pool With beach appropriate weather officially settled in, Tourism Minister Neil Costa this morning outlined the first phase of this year’s beach initiative. New features already installed at Eastern Beach, Western Beach and Catalan Bay are concrete walkways that mirror former wooden paths leading onto the sand. Suyenne Perez Catania Senior Manager for Products at the Tourist board insisted that these would not give beach users splinters and would avoid being vandalised, with one slab weighing 450 kilos. Improvements further included re-designed and recently implemented walkways, for easier access onto the sand.

The second phase of the beach improvement initiative will be completed for the start of bathing season on the 7th June and will include the implementation of water park facilities similar to that of Western Beach, at all other beaches in Gibraltar. This will also see the implementation of jelly fish booms at all beaches. Minister Costa commented that although last year saw no return of jellyfish to Gibraltar, sightings have been made already this season.

Currently lifeguards are on duty on weekends and public holidays, in the lead up to the official bathing season kick off, beach attendants are already in service every day.

Further improvements to facilities at all beaches include showers, which turn on and off via a handle, as the button system was consistently tampered with. costa camp bay pool

Moving on to Camp Bay, Minister Costa showed off the recently completed swimming pools, which have undergone a complete overhaul. The pools now use their own chlorination and filtration systems, meaning they are self cleaning. The pool surfaces have been replaced with a linoleum membrane that is much cleaner and softer to stand on. The large pool will have its own lifeguard on duty in the area throughout the Summer.

Further improvements to Camp bay include new stainless steel stairwells leading down to the sea. These include a resting platform and coconut matting for better grip.

Moving on to Little Bay, Suyenne, and her colleague Alain Gatt of the Tourist Board’s Upper Rock and Beaches Department, explained that the pool had also been fitted with its own filtration system and new flooring.

Sandy Bay Works

Commenting on the on-going works to Sandy Bay Minister Costa told YGTV that the final tons of sand would be deployed in the first week of June. Refurbishments to the shower and toilet facilities will also be carried out before bathing season. The Minister assured the public that the ‘very welcome’ shuttle service from Europa Point car park to Sandy bay will continue this year, as from June 7th.

The Minister noted that the public’s response on the improvements have been extremely positive, he added, ‘Going to the beach in the summer is a cherished family tradition in Gibraltar. We are very conscious that the facilities have to be improved year on year because the public expects high standards in their beaches. We will continue to invest to ensure that these are fully accessible to all in the community so they can continue to enjoy their bathing season which is such an important ingredient of our way of life during the summer months.’
He went on to thank GJBS for carrying out these improvements in such a short amount of time. camp bay
