Jun 02 - King Juan Carlos Abdicates
Spain's King Juan Carlos has announced his abdication this morning. His son Prince Felipe will take over although this will require an amendment to the country’s constitution.
The 76-year-old king was a key figure in Spain’s transition to democracy following Franco’s death in 1975.
Apart from the King suffering numerous health problems recently, the Spanish royal family has also been hit by a series of scandals that have seen its popularity fall in a nation suffering widespread unemployment and disenchantment with its ruling class.
The outgoing King is expected to reveal the reasons behind his abdication in the near future.
