Jun 04 - Flowers for Football

gardening As part of the Alameda Gardens’ Gardening Club initiative, the children have this year developed a World Cup themed flowerbed complete with GFA national team shirt wearing scarecrow and flag decorations depicting each country involved in the football tournament.

Speaking at the launch of the project, Dr. Bensusan of the Gardens explained that they chose this theme for two reasons, firstly to support the upcoming World Cup tournament, and also to celebrate and commemorate the Gibraltar Football association’s acceptance into UEFA last year.

Dr. Bensusan touched upon the importance of the children’s’ involvement, as the project served to teach them about various salient issues regarding the environment. He went on to thank the children and members of his staff involved in the ongoing scheme, including Andrew Abrines, Chris Gilder. He further went on to thank Lucy Hart for her involvement.

The education programme was kicked off two years ago and has become hugely popular amongst school children. Last year’s major project involved the children developing a fruit and vegetable patch in the Gardens.
