Jun 05 - Today Is World Environment Day

World Environment Day (WED) is the United Nations' principal vehicle for the creation of worldwide awareness of the environment, enhancing political attention and action. It is celebrated every year on the 5th June in more than 100 countries around the world.

Gibraltar has now been celebrating this event for 10 years, having first participated in 2004. Every year WED targets a particular environmental topic, with this year’s theme being climate change in small island developing nations. Although Gibraltar is a developed country, it still shares many of the challenges shared by other small nations and this year’s theme focuses on helping children to understand what climate change is and how it could affect Gibraltar in the future.

Children from both middle and primary schools will take to the stage at the Tercentenary Sports Hall to give their own unique take on this year’s theme via song and dance.

This is an annual feature in the Department of the Environment’s agenda and is the culmination of the environmental education programme which is run in conjunction with the Department of Education.
