Aug 21 - Students Receive GCSE Results – Government “Disappointed” As Bayside GCSE Pass Rate Down 10%

Students received their GCSE results this morning. The overall pass rate (A*-C) this year for local students was 63% which is slightly down from last year. Although Westside school maintained its 2013 result at 68%, Bayside has seen a fall to 58%, down 10% from last year. The Government has said it is “disappointed” with the fall in Bayside's pass rate.

The Minister for Education, Gilbert Licudi, has congratulated the many students who have been successful in their GCSE examinations.

The Government says that a dip in results “was not unexpected” following changes to the grade boundaries and tougher marking by the examining boards. Exams regulator Ofqual had already predicted more variability in the results compared to last year.

The Department of Education says it will now carry out a full analysis of all results and will take all measures that are necessary in order to redress any issues which are identified.

The Government stresses that it is, in any event, important to provide support to those students who have not been as successful as they may have wished, adding that the Department of Education, the schools, and the Gibraltar College will be close at hand to offer them appropriate guidance and assistance. The Government says that it is worth remarking that 71% of students who entered the alternative year 12 programme and retook GCSEs, have achieved a minimum of 5 passes at A*-C.

“This shows that with the right support and willingness to work hard, good results are possible,” concluded a statement.
