Sep 02 - ESG Prepares for Clean Up the World 2014

cutwLooking ahead to this year’s Clean up the World campaign, the ESG yesterday announced that I-CARE will host an exhibition on renewable energy and sustainable living ‘bringing a fleet of electric cars for various displays’. The Clipperton Project will also sail into Gibraltar to aid with the clean up and collaborate with the Heritage Trust in a number of activities.

The ESG is requesting that volunteers register for the Clean Up well before the date of the campaign, which is set for September 20th. Organiser Janet Howitt insisted that they aim to highlight prevailing problem of littering. The campaign will be calling for Litter Wardens and more priority to be given to enforcement, but also for positive signage encouraging the community to respect and look after the Rock. The ESG believes a year round radio and tv campaign, extended to all type of social media, would also reinforce this principle.

The ESG is equally concerned about the impact our plastic waste in particular has on the marine environment. The group welcomed the netting enclosure finally erected at the main refuse depot at Europa Advance Road this year, insisting that it will reduce the litter blown out of the quarry for years.

During the Clean Up period a host of events, workshops, exhibitions and rallies will be held as from 18th September through to the end of the month. A detailed programme will be made available soon.
