Sep 05 - British Forces Gibraltar Support Cycle To Work Day

A number of British Forces Personnel jumped on their bike yesterday to support the UK National Cycle to Work Day initiative.

Cycle to Work Day is a national event, championed by multi gold medal winning Paralympic cyclistDame Sarah Storey, which aims to encourage everyone to take to two wheels and cycle to work for just one day on Thursday 4th September 2014.

The UK national initiative is particularly timely for RAF Station Commander Greg ‘Vasco’ Smith, who recently authorised the purchase of 10 communal bikes for use around RAF Gibraltar, Greg explains:

“As a Station Commander the RAF provide me with an annual Lifestyle Improvement Grant from our Central Funds, which we are allowed to use to provide equipment or purchase items that will, as the name suggests, improve the lifestyle of personnel in RAF Gibraltar.

This year we decided to buy 10 bikes which can be signed out and used not only to travel to and from work but also to travel around work during the day. The airfield is a fairly big place so they are ideal when people need to go from A to B quickly, but they are also used to go from one MOD site to another, which is ideal for both wellbeing and health benefits.”

The 10 communal RAF bikes have proved very popular with all ten being regularly booked out, so there are now plans to purchase a further four bikes to allow more people to get around RAF Gibraltar and the Command whilst enjoying the health benefits of cycling and reducing their carbon footprint at the same time.

In the UK the Cycle to Work initiative has attracted tens of thousands of participants today with the event growing more popular each year.
