Sep 08 - Port Authority Announces Recruitment Of New Pilot

The Gibraltar Port Authority has announced the recruitment of a new pilot, Captain Richard Whalley to its ranks, bringing up the current complement to seven.

Captain Whalley joins the Gibraltar Pilots’ Partnership from the Stena Line where he was a Senior Master.

Gibraltar pilots play a pivotal role in the over 8,000 ship movements undertaken by the port every year to ensure the safe navigation of vessels coming into the anchorage or sailing to and from the harbour.

Minister for Port, Neil Costa, welcomed the increase in staffing levels in a key area of port activity.

Mr Costa said: “I am delighted with Captain Whalley’s appointment, as it underlines our administration’s indefatigable commitment to provide more and better human and material resources to the Port of Gibraltar, which is a key component of our economic success.”

For his part, Captain of the Port, Commodore Bob Sanguinetti extended a warm welcome to Captain Whalley to the Gibraltar Pilots’ Partnership.

He said: “Richard joins a team of seven pilots, who provide valuable local knowledge and ship handling expertise to visiting vessels and board all inbound commercial vessels.”
