Jan 14 - Lifeguards Awarded Qualifications Following Successful Summer

lifeguard Yesterday evening a host of candidates received their National Beach Lifeguard Qualifications and Life Support 3 certificates following a successful Summer of patrolling Gibraltar’s beaches, under the Gibraltar Tourist Board.

The certificates, awarded by the Royal Life Saving Society, were presented by the Minister for Tourism Samantha Sacramento to; Adam Alcantara, Jesse Barnes, Jesse Borg, Mathew Borg, Jeremy Britto, Kenneth Chipolina, Jason Costa, Marco De la Chica, George Dudley, Mathew Escarcena, Soufiane Lachhab, Mathew Magginis, Christian Piner, Adrian Plows, Cheryl Romero, Janice Sampere, Kayleigh Sanchez, Brandon Sawyer, Christian Segovia, Jian Tavares, Colin Tester, Haytam Tinitini, Jaron Walker and Jack Yeo.

Other candidates; James Carlin, Karl Parody, James Quigley, Karl Sene and Wesley Warwick renewed their NBLQ again, after having received it in a previous year.

The Minister thanked the lifeguards for their hard work throughout the Summer, especially considering new measures that were in place to make the beaches more accessible to disabled members of the community. The qualification covered beach supervision and rescue, elements assessing the candidate’s knowledge and competency on the principles of lifeguarding a beach, risk assessment, casualty identification and administration of first aid and CPR.

A practical assessment also requires candidates to swim 400m in 8 minutes or less. The Giovanni Sene Award, which is now presented each year to the most outstanding candidate, was awarded to Jack Yeo for his ‘keenness and reliability’.

The Award Ceremony took place in the presence of RLSS Assesors Norbert and Michael Sene and Stewart Bonavia as well as the Tourist Board’s CEO Nicky Guerrero and other Tourist Board representatives.
