Mar 31 - Sol Seruya Passes Away

news Prominent Gibraltarian figure, Solomon Seruya has passed away at age 88. Having entered politics as a young man, through the AACR and serving as Minister for Economic Development under Sir Joshua Hassan in the 1960s, ‘Sol’ as he was affectionately called, was well known on the Rock.

As a sign of respect, family owned cosmetic store chain, S.M Seruya, remain closed today ‘due to bereavement’. 

During his life Sol served as President of the Chamber of Commerce, following a stint living in Isreal and acting as Israeli Ambassador to the Philipines.

In a Government statement, Chief Minister Fabian Picardo expressed his ‘heartfelt condolences’ to the family. He added, ‘there is no doubt that Gibraltar has lost one of its great personalities.’

A minute’s silence will be held in Parliament tomorrow afternoon, with Government flags flying at half mast.
