Jul 21 - Special Olympics Gibraltar Team Set Off For Los Angeles

A team of 22 athletes left Gibraltar yesterday go to the Special Olympics World Games held in Beverley Hills in Los Angeles, this year.

Joining the athletes who will be competing in aquatics, athletics, open water swimming, golf, bocce, bowling and 7-a-side unified football were six unified partners, 11 coaches and Head of Delegation Annie Risso as well as Caine Sanchez Assistant Head of Delegation.

The Host Town will offer competitors a 3-day programme that takes place prior to the Opening Ceremony of the Special Olympics World Games. At their Host Towns, delegations of athletes from around the world will be welcomed and celebrated.

The schedule of events will include getting to know community members, taking part in cultural activities unique to each area, and training and resting before the Games. The Special Olympics athletes will feel truly celebrated and Host Town members will make friends for life.

The Opening Ceremony is due to be held on Saturday at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum – the site of the 1932 and 1984 Olympic Games, and will be televised worldwide on ESPN.

Honorary Chairs of the Games are President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, who will open the Games, with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and California Governor Jerry Brown serving as Honorary Hosts.
