Aug 06 – 10,000 Signature-Petition Requesting The Queen To Visit Gibraltar Handed Over To Government

Members from Gibraltar’s New Movement have handed over a petition with 10,000 signatures requesting Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to visit Gibraltar.

Earlier today, committee members handed over the petition to Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia who will be passing this over to Buckingham Palace.

Chairperson Simy Herbert explained that the committee felt this was the best time to hand over the petition after the Panorama published that the Queen might visit Spain.

Mrs Herbert explained that she has been working with her committee for the past six months to collect signatures, and 90% of those who have signed for it are excited to see the Queen come to visit Gibraltar.

She said that some people raised concerns about the frontier situation with Spain should the Queen decide to visit Gibraltar.

However, Mrs Herbert adds: “She is our Queen, she has a duty to her 30,000 loyal Gibraltar citizens. People are very British and very, very proud of their monarch.

“I remember when she came here when I was five, my mum dressed me up in a white dress with a red and blue ribbon, and she walked around Victoria Stadium waving at everyone. I still get emotional when I think of it. It was a lovely moment.”

Committee member Trevor Bickerstaff said: “We have every confidence that this would actually get to Buckingham Palace.”

His mother, Christine Bickerstaff said: “I think it is time for the Queen to come visit us, we are British more than the British.”

The Queen last visited Gibraltar in 1954, and Gibraltar’s New Movement hope she will visit again soon.
