Aug 25 – Eight Girl Guides Awarded Leadership Qualifications

A group of eight girls were awarded their Girl Guides Leadership Qualifications by Lady Dutton at the Convent today.

These qualifications will allow the girls to lead Rainbows, Brownies, Guides or Senior Section units, and they have been supported by mentors within their units and the Commissioner Valerie Makey over the last year.

Jenella Carling, 18, will be running the Rainbows unit as from September onwards, working with girls aged between five and seven.

Jenella said she is excited and is looking forward to starting a new programme with the girls, and has planned a variety of activities for them.

The newly-qualified leaders have had to take on a number of modules, including their role in the programme, their role in Guiding, safety and unit administrations and managing the unit. In all cases the girls have taken an active role in programme organisation, managed small budgets, organised events, contributed to the Association’s PR and attended pack holidays, outings and excursions as part of the leadership team.

Valerie Makey, the Commissioner for Girlguiding in Gibraltar, said: “The girls have worked very hard during the year. Having them ready and qualified before they go to university means they can come back and get into it immediately.

“It is very important that the girls realise the significance of this qualification and they take it seriously and we make sure every module is signed off properly.”
