Jan 20 - Memorandum To Foster Greater Cooperation Between GFA, GSLA And RGP

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was this morning signed between the Gibraltar Sports and Leisure Authority, the Gibraltar Football Association and the Royal Gibraltar Police.

The MoU sets out the different responsibilities of the three organisations in relation to public order at locally held football matches and aims to foster cooperation between the three bodies.

Minister Linares welcomed the MoU: “I’m happy that the three institutions have been able to get together to agree a formula to work together to make such events a success.”

Commissioner of Police Eddie Yome explained some of preparatory work conducted by the RGP ahead of international football matches: “We conduct a risk assessment to see what the policing requirements will be. We’ll sit down with the GFA and GSLA and look at the possible segregation of fans and we’ll also have meetings with the police force from wherever the team is coming from.”

Dennis Beiso, the GFA’s General Secretary, said: “We’re very much looking forward to hosting safe and secure football matches in Gibraltar in the future.”

Reagan Lima, the GSLA’s CEO, noted that the MoU was very much a “live document” that could be altered in the future as responses to events change and organisations evolve and learn. Mr Lima also noted that crowd behavior at local football matches was generally good with very few incidents reported in the last year.
