Jun 14 – Good Performance From Special Olympic Gibraltar Footballers In Italy

A team of eight Special Olympic Gibraltar footballers set off on Sunday to La Spezia in Italy for a 5-a-side competition in the XXXIII Special Olympics Italy National Summer Games.

On Monday the divisioning took place and after the long 12 hour journey which saw the team arriving at 1.30 am in the morning.

The team lost two games, against Rome and Milan, before drawing 0 - 0 against Malta. This meant the team were placed in the "B" division with two Italian teams and Malta, and after an impressive opening ceremony on Monday night the games began in earnest on Tuesday.

Special Olympics Gibraltar won their first game against one of the Italian teams, 2-0 with goals by Sam Hook, a great solo run, and Tyrone Davis from a well-taken free kick. The team performed really well and played some great football.

Their second game was against the Milan team who we had lost against in divisioning. The Gibraltar team did not have their best game, but still managed to draw 0-0. The team now move on to a game against Malta today, who have won their first two games. They need a win or a draw to guarantee a place in the final.
