Oct 27 - Special Olympics Gibraltar Hosts Futsal Tournament As Gareth Cowin Memorial Trophy Comes To Gibraltar

Special Olympics Gibraltar will be hosting an international futsal tournament on Saturday 4th November, in the GSLA Tercentenary Sports Hall, when the Gareth Cowin Memorial Trophy comes to Gibraltar.

This follows the success of the Gibraltar team last year when the competition was held in the Isle of Man, and in which Gibraltar earned the right to host the tournament this year when they clinched victory in a closely fought final.

A spokesman for Special Olympics Gibraltar said: "The event is held in memory of popular Isle of Man Special Olympic athlete Gareth Cowin who tragically passed away whilst competing in the Special Olympic World Winter Games in Seoul, South Korea in 2013. Gareth visited Gibraltar several times to participate in our National Games. He loved the Rock and was well known to Gibraltar's own athletes.

"This will be the fourth year when the trophy has been fought for between various disability football teams, not just Special Olympics, mainly from the north west of the UK. This year attendance has been affected by the departure of Monarch Airlines which left several teams unable to attend but teams from the Isle of Man, Warrington and Algeciras will be visiting Gibraltar for the weekend to take part.

"The GFA will be the main sponsors of the event this year and Saccone and Speed (Gibraltar) Limited, Allied Traders Limited and Gibmaroc Limited are also providing their support. Members of the Cowin family will be coming over to present the trophy. The round robin competition will commence at 9.45 am on Saturday and is open to the public who are welcome to go along and support the teams."
