Feb 20 - Five Gibraltar Regiment Soldiers Selected To Play In Woolwich Cup Semi-Finals

Five members of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment (RG) were recently selected to represent the British Army Infantry team in the semi-finals of the Woolwich Cup, with Corporal Jamie Fortuna being selected as the captain of the side.

Cpl Fortuna, who has played for the team on a number of occasions, said: “It was a tough game. The Adjutants General Corps were a very physical team. We didn’t have our full strength squad as there are many of us who couldn’t make it due to other commitments. The Infantry lost 1-0 in extra time, which was disappointing as last year they reached the final.”

Sgt Paul Grech added: “We were very disappointed to lose such a closely contested match, especially as last year we did so well in the same competition.”

Maj Julian Valverde, the RG Football Officer who was invited to watch the game and co-ordinate future support stated: “The RG continues to promote team sports, it develops team spirit and fitness, two of the corner stones of an Infantry soldier’s ethos.  We are quite unique in having so many players playing at such a high level considering the size of our unit, and though we are not always able to support we will continue to strive to support all soldiers in any sports they wish to pursue.”
