May 29 - David Phelps Wins Gibraltar Target Shooting Open Championship

shootingThe Gibraltar Target Shooting Association this weekend held their Gibraltar Open Championship 2013. Overall winner of the Open was David Phelps of Wales, who proved to be the most consistent over the three days and racked up the most 100s.

The Association claimed that David, the Commonwealth Champion ‘led a cool campaign in a variety of wind and lighting conditions, whilst being humble enough to give advice to the less experienced competitors. A worthy winner and great sportsman. Neil Almond and Martyn Payne, both of England came in second and third place respectively both having shot strongly over the three day event.

'Although shooting is a very equal sport, most competitions will have a male and female class, although this is not the case in the Gibraltar International Open, every year we have an award for the top female athlete and this year Louise Aiken of Northern Ireland took top spot. Her masterly display over the three days peaked in Day 2 when she won Class A.

'The Tuto Garcia Competition 2013 was won by Gerard Kelleher for Gibraltar, although in Class C, his three day improving averages and 100 saw him take top spot on final count-back.

'The team event saw Team Gibraltar take the gold with Gibraltar’s best shooters, the silver went to Robs Rockers who put up a valiant effort despite having two members from Class C!’

The Association also made a conscious effort to make a special mention to all Gibraltar’s new talent including, Darren Fa, Tony Robinson, Tito Ferro, Brenden Robinson and Allyson Attias. The GTSA thanked not only our new members but also the coaching staff for putting in their time and effort for free.
