Jul 09 - 'Bigger and Better' Summer Sports and Leisure Programme for 2013

ummer sports and leisure programmeLaunching the 2013 Summer Sports and Leisure Programme this afternoon, Regional Director of NatWest Gibraltar, David Bruce, along with Sports Minister Steven Linares and CEO of the GSLA, Joe Hernandez, promised that this year’s scheme would ‘bigger and better’ then ever before.

The scheme, which has proved immensely popular amongst youngsters in former years, will not only provide an extensive selection of sporting activities to entertain school children during the Summer holidays, but will also include new workshops with the Royal Gibraltar Police, Childline and the Alameda Gardens. The programme also boasts a Stagecoach Theatre Arts Summer School.

Mr. Bruce highlighted the fact that ‘a lot of thought and effort had gone into the programme to ensure that those who may not be particularly sporty are also very much included in the programme. I think it’s a testament to the team, the success that it’s had.’ He added that NatWest was delighted to have played the small part of sponsor, for 14 years.

Sports and Culture Minister, Steven Linares insisted that he was delighted to see that culture was slowly creeping into the programme he noted that NatWest’s partnership with the Sports and Leisure Authority in this endeavour highlighted the Government’s wish to engage with the Private Sector.

Sports Development and Training Officer with the Authority, Michelle Turner noted that the new schemes, including the gardening programme, came about as a result of working closely with the youngsters last year. The ever-popular ‘Stay and Play’ programme for children with special needs will run throughout the Summer once again and will incorporate the help of Graduates on the Government Scheme. This year will see the introduction the Junior Sports Leadership Award, which will allow for a selection of 14 to 16 year olds to gain a set of qualifications in Sports Leadership. Eight volunteers for the summer Sports Programme will also be able to carry out a Sports Leaders UK induction course, which will grant them the minimum qualification for those who wish to apply for a sports leadership course in the future.
