Jul 23 - Summer Sports Programme Enters Second Week Of Fun Activities

The Summer Sports and Leisure Programme is about to enter its second week of fun activities. The programme is sponsored by NatWest and co-ordinated by the Gibraltar Sports & Leisure Authority (GSLA) and consists of the Sports Train, Children’s Corner and Teen Sports, all organised directly by the GSLA within the Bayside Sports Centre. The GSLA has also partnered with Gibraltar’s voluntary sports associations and leisure providers to allow for a broad and diverse range of other sports and leisure opportunities which will take place at the Bayside Sports Centre and other leisure facilities over the next week.

Activities of note this week include:

  • Walks through History for children ages 9 to 12 organised by the Gibraltar Museum. There are a number of exciting locations being visited this summer which allows children a rare opportunity to visit the fascinating areas steeped in Gibraltar’s diverse history such as; the Neanderthal Caves, which involves a possible boat trip; the Mediterranean Steps and their brilliant views of the bay either side of Gibraltar; as well as like the 700-year old Moorish Castle, the WWII tunnels that wind through the Rock of Gibraltar itself and the huge 100 Ton Gun and Parson’s Lodge Battery.
  • Ju-jitsu on Monday 27th to Wednesday 29th at the Victoria Sports Hall from 10 to 12 noon. This 3-day course will introduce children to self-defence via ju-jitsu and develop their skills.
  • Triathlon for 10 to 14 year olds. New to this year’s GSLA programme, the triathlon introduction is an excellent opportunity to develop children’s endurance in multiple sports, and includes techniques for transitioning between swimming, running and cycling.

Other sports and leisure sessions ongoing throughout the GSLA’s Summer Sports Programme include popular staples such as:

  • Sports Train for children over the age of 7 years - Monday to Friday 10am to 12.30pm.
  • Children’s Corner for children aged 5 and 6 years – Monday, Wednesday and Friday 10am to 12 noon.
  • Stay and Play programme for children with special needs, with activities such as swimming at GSLA small pool, integration with the Sports Train and outings to Gibraltar’s historical locations.
