May 16 - RGP Warns Public About Email Scam

rgpThe Royal Gibraltar Police have today reminded members of the public to ignore email scams that regularly do the rounds.

These usually entail ‘confidential’ contact by a bank manager who knows about a deposit (usually in the Millions) where the depositor has passed away leaving behind no next of kin to claim the funds.

The recipient of the email is then asked to make contact and eventually asked for his/her banking details in order to make the deposit in exchange for a percentage of the funds.

An RGP statement on the issue advised ‘What usually happens next is that the email recipient’s bank account is then cleared of funds. The funds will usually end up in a jurisdiction from where it is very difficult, if not impossible, to recover the funds from.

‘Such emails are similar to the ‘Lottery Win’ emails purporting that someone has won the lottery without even having purchased a ticket.

‘The public are asked to ignore these emails and not respond in any way.’
