Jan 09 The Royal Gibraltar Regiment’s Role in Afghanistan

  • Written by YGTV Team

Various members of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment are currently helping and improving various other units serving in Afghanistan. Other Regiment soldiers are training for potential deployments.

One RGR Officer at the HQ Task Force Helmand in Lashkar Gah, is Maj. David King. ‘I enjoy the work and I really cannot complain about my quality of life out here. As I’m at the main HQ, the food has the reputation of being the best food in Helmand province and we are provided with all the amenities we could wish for. Of course, I miss the family, although I do try to phone them every evening.’

Another member of the RGR serving in Helmand is Lt. John Pitto who is also attached to the 1st Battalion The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment. Lt. Pitto is the commander in charge of a twelve-man group tasked with mentoring members of the Afghan National Civil Order Police. ‘The task is important in the lead-up to our extraction in 2014. Our main effort is now the mentoring of local troops in order to set the conditions to help NATO leave Afghantistan. By then we expect Afghanistan’s own security forces can cope with future threats themselves.’

All RGR members currently deployed in Afghanistan are; Maj. David King, Captain Jamie Allan, Lt. John Pitto and Sgt. Delipiani.

There are approximately 10 other members set to fly out to Afghanistan in March.
